Active enrolment model

Studying is not just about attending lectures and classes and taking part in the teaching activities. The active enrolment model shows you what is expected of you as a student at KEA.

The study programmes at KEA are full-time programmes, which means that you should expect to have to devote an average of about 42 hours a week to your studies. The hours are split between various activities such as teaching activities and preparation time.

All our study programmes involve the following four activities:

  • Teaching activities

Teaching activities are scheduled lectures and classes, during which one or more teachers are present in the classroom.

There are two types of teaching activities at KEA:

    • Theory-based teaching activities
The theory-based teaching activities focus on theory. One or more teachers will be present at all times. Theory-based teaching activities include e.g. lectures by internal and external lecturers, classroom-based activities etc.
    • Practice-based teaching activities
The practice-based teaching activities translate theory into practice, and the knowledge you have gained through the theory-based teaching activities is transformed into projects and/or products. One or more teachers will be present at all times. The practice-based teaching activities include e.g. exercises in labs or workshops, case work, workshops, company visits, online exercises, guidance in connection with projects or group work, project presentations, etc.
  • Preparation time

Preparation time is the time which you or your study group spend preparing for subjects/programme elements.

This may involve, for example, reading notes taken during lectures or classes, watching videoed teaching activities, reading the syllabus, study group work, project work in one of KEA's workshops, information searches, collecting empirical data, portfolio work, doing assignments, exercises, going to the conference or exhibitions, etc.

  • Internship

The internship is an important part of your study programme at KEA, and depending on the type of study programme you choose to do, you must do either a 10-week or a 20-week internship in the course of your studies. The time allocated for your internship also includes a number of hours of guidance from your internship supervisor.

Internship activities vary depending on the type of internship which you decide to do. It is up to you to divide your time between the work which you carry out for the host organisation, writing your internship report, preparing for the internship exam etc.

In connection with the internship, you should expect to spend time on the following activities:

    • Preparation and approval of internship contract
    • Writing applications to potential host organisations
    • Undertaking the assignments agreed with the host organisation
    • Logbook
    • Sparring with your contact person at the host organisation
    • Evaluating the internship
    • Writing an internship report
    • Exam
    • Etc.
  • Final project

The final project is the time which you spend researching and writing your final project, either on your own or together with some of your fellow students. In the course of writing your final project, you will also be offered guidance from your supervisor.

You are responsible for dividing the time you spend on your project between activities like:

    • Collection of empirical data
    • Reading theory
    • Working with a company
    • Writing of the assignment
    • Requirements for the final project
    • Etc.

If you want to make the most of your time at KEA and get a good exam, you must be active and play a role in establishing good working relations in your group. It is also important that you make sure to seek help when needed; it may be a good idea to ask you lecturer(s) or the student and career guidance officers for help.

Active enrolment means, among other things, that you must participate actively in the teaching activities, submit your assignments on time and sit exams. If you do not participate actively in the teaching activities, it may become difficult for you to keep up with the others or find fellow students who will want to do group work with you.

Charrette

The KEA Charrette is held once a year. The Charette form is intense time-limited cooperation on innovative solutions to complex tasks. The participants are students from different kinds of education and different countries and cultures. The challenge takes place in KEA’s surroundings in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, and takes place in the autumn.

The concept provides a good framework for the combination of learning, cooperating and being innovative in a cultural meeting. It consists of three main elements:

  • Listening to project owners and other stakeholders
  • Imagining how all points of view can be united into a result that remains sustainable and financially justifiable, etc.
  • Drawing quick sketches that open up for creative thinking and ongoing dialogue

KEA’s students have a third of the seats in the Charrette and guest students from partner institutions abroad have two-thirds of the seats. If you’re interested in participating as a student, you must therefore apply for a seat.

Curriculum (books)

At KEA Library you can always find a copy of the readings from your syllabus. You cannot borrow the books from the syllabus with you home, but you can read them in the library or scan the chapters you need on our book scanner. This way, you are always guaranteed access to the literature on your syllabus.

We often buy extra copies of the books on the syllabus for our regular collection, and you can of course borrow them to take home with you – under normal terms and according to the principle of first come, first served.

Curriculum (programme)

All KEA’s programmes are governed by a curriculum. Among other things, the curriculum describes your subjects, what semester they occur in, their intended learning goals for your knowledge, skills and competences, how to work with the study and when the exams will take place.

You can find your curriculum on your programme page

The goal of your course of study is for you to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies within disciplines of professional relevance to your line of education. KEA is a higher education institution and therefore offers teaching on the tertiary level.

The curriculum refers to knowledge, skills and competencies to describe the concrete learning objectives of your education, i.e. what your learn. EU institutions use knowledge, skills and competences as a common frame of reference to compare educational programmes. Among other things, this enables credit transfer.  In your programme curriculum, you’ll find the specific learning goals for your programme, split into knowledge, skills and competences.

Knowledge and skills may be learned and form the basis for competences. We obtain knowledge by studying something, by taking classes and reading, whereas we obtain skills by doing exercises corresponding to practice.

We have acquired competences when we’re able to combine new knowledge and skills as a basis for competent action, meaning that we are able to use both theory and practice to solve a task.

The subjects in your programme are worth a number of ECTS points. See more under ECTS.

Databases

Delivery of goods

If, on agreement with a teacher, you order a large batch of study-related goods for delivery at one of KEA’s addresses, you must be present to pick it up yourself.

If you need help with collecting it, please write to the Service Desk (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - remember to write from your KEA-mail) at least one workday before delivery. If possible, request that the goods be delivered to a particular floor and room number.

For delivery of goods to GBG, state the following delivery address:
Meinungsgade 6
2200 Copenhagen N

If the goods are to be used immediately, the supplier must remove any packaging. It is not possible to store goods which are not to be used within the foreseeable future.

Dispensation

If you find yourself in an unusual situation that prevents you from complying with the rules of your degree programme, you can apply for exemption.

When you apply for exemption, you must prove that you were unable to comply with the rule in question. Circumstances which are within your control or which could have been planned for cannot be considered exceptional (e.g. delays in uploading an assignment via the digital exam system or your wish to go on a holiday).

In your application you must:

  • State the rule to which your application relates (e.g. exam conditions according to the curriculum)
  • Explain the special circumstances why you can not follow that rule (e.g., you are suffering from dyslexia), and explain what you wish to achieve

To enable the head of programme to assess your application, it is important that you state the reasons for your application and attatch relevant documentation for the exceptional circumstances in question (e.g. medical certificate, documentation for dyslexia, etc.)

ECTS

The subjects in your programme are worth a number of ECTS points. In the programme curriculum you can see how many ECTS each individual subject is worth. ECTS is an abbreviation of the European Credit Transfer System. It is an EU standard which, among other things, is used to transfer merit for modules at the same level of education run in different educational institutions abroad or in Denmark.

ECTS points rate a programme or a programme element in number of working hours. One semester equals 30 ECTS. This is a measure of the work hours you must put into your study as a student . For a full-time programme, the ECTS points correspond to 37 hours of work per week spread over preparation, assignments and classes. In a year, this includes normal holidays for full-time work. But ECTS points are NOT an indication of educational level, degree of difficulty or the number of classes.

In OUR ACTIVE ENROLMENT MODEL you can see what is expected of you as a student at KEA. In the Course Catalogue you can see how many hours of teaching and preparation you can expect to use on a specific subject.

Education law

Your programme forms part of the approved state education system in Denmark, which is governed by the Minister for Higher Education and Science.

The curriculum is a legal document which lays down a number of provisions for your programme within the framework of applicable laws and ministerial orders. Among other things, the curriculum describes your subjects, what semester they occur in, their intended learning goals for your knowledge, skills and competences, how to work with the study and when the exams will take place.

You’ll find the curriculum for your programme on your programme pageon your programme page.

At the website of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science you’ll find the laws and orders that apply to education in general or to a specific programme at KEA.

Alternatively, you can go to retsinformation.dk where you can make a free-text search throughout the Danish register of laws and regulations – including the orders on specific programmes.

Educational System

Copenhagen School of Design and Technology, KEA, offers practice-oriented further education in the form of Academy Profession (AP) Degree Programmes and Bachelor’s Degree Programmes.

If you’ve been admitted to KEA, you’ve chosen a school with a practice-oriented approach as opposed to the more theoretical methodology of the universities. These are two different methods. One does not replace the other, they complement each other.

If you’ve graduated with an AP or a Bachelor’s degree from KEA you have the possibility of topping up with a range of continuing education. However, with a few exceptions, there is no immediate line from KEA’s programmes to the universities’ Master’s programmes. The individual universities will assess whether to admit you to a Master’s on the basis of your profile.
