When you are about to graduate, there are several practical things you need to be aware of - including signing up for an unemployment fund (a-kasse).

We have created a to-remember list for you who will soon graduate:

✔ Sign up for an unemployment fund (a-kasse)

  • No later than 12 months before you finish your education, you must register with an unemployment fund (it is typically free to be a student member) to obtain the right to unemployment benefits from the first day of unemployment and avoid a quarantine period of four weeks. If you do not register until you have finished, you will not be entitled to unemployment benefits until four weeks later.
  • You must register with the unemployment insurance fund no later than 14 days after you finish your last exam. If you sign up later, you are only entitled to unemployment benefits after one year of membership.
  • If you have signed up for an unemployment insurance fund 12 months before you finish your education, you must also meet a 14-day deadline - you must change from a student member to a graduate member.
  •  Talk to your unemployment fund if you want to continue in your study job after graduation. It can have consequences for your right to unemployment benefits.

✔ Consider whether you want to be a member of an union (fagforening)

  • Trade unions agree on pay and working conditions with the employer and establish collective agreements so that you are guaranteed minimum wage, parental leave, holiday etc.
  • Trade unions can also give you advice in relation to work-related issues, as well as give you feed back on employment contracts and pay conditions.
  • You pay a membership fee to be a member. It is not mandatory to be a member of a union and you are free to choose exactly the one you want.

✔ Graduates with special needs/disability

  • If you have a disability or special needs, it is important that you talk to the unemployment insurance fund about your specific situation when you graduate from KEA.
  • Your municipality’s jobcenter is obliged to provide you with advice, and we recommend that you contact them before you complete your education so that you know your rights.

✔ Join KEA's Alumni

KEA Alumne is a free network for you who have graduated from KEA. The network gives you the opportunity to keep in touch with KEA by meeting, reuniting or revisiting former fellow students and strengthen your professional network and your career.

✔ Use KEA's job portal

As a student or graduate, you can use our job portal. The job portal allows you to see job openings that are relevant to you. You can create a job agent that selects the most relevant ads for you.

✔ Use KEA's Study and Career Guidance

The career guidance is based on your specific and personal life situation as well as your competencies, dreams and challenges. At the same time, we help you with tools to handle challenges and make informed choices. We talk about your KEA-skills and how you can apply them in your future career.
